Running a Home-Based Business That Sells
▶TLDR
- A home-based business still needs a clear offer and a way to sell it.
- Short personalized video builds trust without spending on ads.
- Simple systems let you work from home without the wheels coming off.
Mike joined Tim Melanson on Work @ Home RockStar to talk about building a business from home. Working from your desk at home does not change the fundamentals. It just raises the stakes on getting them right.
Here is how Mike keeps a home business selling.
From home, clarity matters even more
When you work from home, you do not have an office or a big team to lend you credibility. Your offer has to carry the weight. Mike's advice is to make it one clear outcome for one clear buyer, so nobody has to squint to understand what you do. A sharp offer sells for you even when you are the whole company. A fuzzy one leaves you explaining yourself on every call.
Video outreach is your handshake from home
Without a storefront or a team of reps, you need a way to build trust at a distance. Mike's favorite is the short personalized video. Forty seconds to a minute and change, made for one person. Be friendly, show you did your homework, give one clear offer, give one reason to say yes, then ask. It lands because the buyer can see you paid attention, and that builds trust from the first touch without a single ad dollar.
Simple systems keep the home business steady
The risk of running everything from home is that everything depends on you. Mike's guard against that is to record his tasks, bucket them by type, and hand off the bucket that hurts most. You do not need a big team. You need a few simple systems so a busy week does not take the whole thing down. For more on the remote side of this, the Livin That Life episode is a good listen, and the Global Citizen Life conversation covers running a business from anywhere.
