Turning Your Skillset Into a Coaching Practice
▶TLDR
- You already have the skill. The work is packaging it into one clear offer people can buy.
- Systems are what turn a talented solopreneur into a business that does not depend on you being busy.
- Authority comes from being useful in public, not from telling people you are an expert.
A lot of skilled people stay stuck as freelancers. They are good at the work, but the business around the work is a mess. On the Sage Thought Leadership Podcast with Ed Kless, I talked about how someone with a strong skillset builds that into a coaching practice that holds together.
The short version: the skill is not the hard part. Turning it into a clear offer, a repeatable process, and a way to bring in clients is where most people get stuck.
From a skill to an offer people can buy
When you sell a skill, you sell hours. When you sell an offer, you sell an outcome. That shift changes everything about your pricing and your calendar.
I push people to simplify down to one clear result. Name the process for the outcome the client wants, and keep it to three to five steps. A premium problem deserves a premium price, and most people undercharge by about half while doing thirty percent more work than they charged for. Belief comes before price. If you do not believe the outcome is worth it, the client never will.
If you want to see how this plays out when you package a live program, I got into it on marketing a live learning cohort.
Systems so the business does not live in your head
The moment you want more than one client, you need systems. I record Looms for anything I do more than once, then bucket the tasks so I can hand them off. When it is time to hire, you hire against the most painful bucket first. There is no unicorn assistant who does it all.
This is also how you stop being the bottleneck. If the process is written down, someone else can run it, and you get your time back to work on the parts only you can do. I talked through rebuilding a team the right way in business infrastructure and curing back office blues.
Bringing in clients without chasing them
You do not need ads to fill a coaching practice. Organic content, referrals, short personalized video, and guesting on podcasts all work. The thread through all of it is trust. People buy when they feel understood, not when they understand you.
Being useful in public is how authority gets built. Show your thinking, help people before they pay you, and the right clients come to you already halfway sold.
