Outreach Wins

Updated: Sep 13

For anyone that’s been following me for a long time you know that I preach building a network and creating strong connections.

Unfortunately, most of the young Internet marketers, who are learning to do outreach these days are slamming in boxes with a bunch of phony conversations.

If I see you one more “Hey Mike, can I ask you a question?” I feel like I’m going to snap.

It has become so obvious what is coming within the first three messages. Request to ask a question, some very personal questions such as what is your current revenue, and then a big promise to start scaling your business.

I will sometimes take advantage of these conversations to try and find young and ambitious talent. Most of the people trying to launch these companies may have some talent, but I have strong doubts about their ability to run a business. Nothing against them personally, but if we consider the fact that 90% of businesses fail, it’s just the number game.

I respond to one in every fifteen of these messages. I let them start the conversation and go down the path of pitching me three messages in. Then I give them a pretty rude rejection. Something along the lines of “ I would never work with someone who does the same generic bullshit outreach, pretending to start a conversation but going into a sales pitch instead”

90% of the time I never hear back. They don’t bother, pushing through the rejection and they disappear from my inbox forever.

Sometimes, I get insane responses like this one.

Imagine this, he actually kept writing to me and told me how much he could help me if I just gave him a chance. The definition of insanity.

And so after we filter all of the messages ignored, the post-rejection ghosts, and some insane people we get to a diamond in the rough.

My current fractional CTO is one of those people.

The way he originally reached out felt very inauthentic and like everyone else in the crowd. But I pushed him and he pushed back tactfully. He took the criticism very well and asked me what I thought he could do to improve. Such a great sign.

After a long text conversation and a couple of Zoom meetings, I discovered that he could actually help me automate a number of functions in my business.

We’ve been working together for the past five months and he has saved me and my team hundreds of hours. With the reduction in hours against the increase in my tech costs I will probably be ahead by $15,000 this year alone.

Not to mention that the systems are now evergreen and working forever. So those savings will compound and grow over the years.

A few things to summarize here:

  • If you want my free training on how to send custom videos and get a massive response rate to your outreach, watch the training here

  • If you are in need of automation and simplification of your business systems, hit up Jaden (jadendearmon@gmail.com)

  • Finally, Spend some time reading your junk mail. There is always some interesting material in there showing you how people are reaching out to brands. Plus, you never know who you might find in there.
